When you look at seating charts—ours included—you'll often see a range instead of a specific number of guests per table. That can feel a bit unclear when you want a straightforward answer. A Few Helpful Guidelines:

  • For Formal Dinners: If your event includes a seated meal where guests will be at the table for a while, it’s best to go with the lower end of the seating range. For example, 8 guests fit comfortably at a 60-inch round table for a formal dinner. While you can squeeze in 10 chairs, keep in mind that formal place settings take up more space, and so do elbows! You’ll also want to leave enough room for servers to move around easily.
  • Chair Style Matters: If you’re using bulkier chairs or ones with arms, they’ll take up more room around the table. You may need to reduce the chair count slightly to maintain comfort and avoid crowding.
  • Kids at the Table? You’re in luck! Children typically need less space, so you can often fit more seats than you would for an all-adult setup, sometimes even beyond the standard maximum.
  • Facing a Stage or Focal Point: If your event involves a presentation, performance, or speaker, plan for fewer chairs per table. This gives guests the ability to easily turn their chairs without bumping into each other.
  • Rectangular Tables & Chair Clearance: When using the max number of chairs on a rectangular table, remember—not every chair will tuck fully under the table. It’s a small but important detail when mapping out your layout and making sure guests can move around comfortably.

When selecting tables, consider the following:

  1. Aim for a 24-inch aisle between tables for comfortable navigation.
  2. For round tables, space them 54 inches apart to accommodate chairs; for rectangular tables, maintain a 60-inch gap.
  3. Larger 72-inch round tables require wider centerpieces due to their spacious middle area. When using centerpieces, ensure they are below eye level or less than 12 inches tall to avoid obstructing guests' views of each other. If opting for taller centerpieces, choose slim designs that minimize interference with guests' sightlines.
